Kibale Forest National Park

Kibale forest national park is located in the southern part of Uganda in the districts of Kabarole and Kamwenge, protected by moist evergreen rainforest. The park is about 766 km in size and stands at an altitude of 1,590 meters above sea level. Kibale Forest National Park was gazetted in 1993 to protect a large area of forest previously as a logged forest reserve. It contains a diverse array of landscapes with the most beautiful and varying tracts of tropical forest.  The forest covering predominates in the central and northern part of the park on the raised Fort portal plateau.

Kibale Forest National Park, located in western Uganda, is a tropical rainforest renowned for its rich biodiversity and the highest concentration of primates in Africa. Spanning approximately 795 square kilometers, the park is best known for its chimpanzee trekking experiences, allowing visitors to observe these intelligent primates up close. Getting There

Kibale Forest National Park is accessible by both road and air.

  • By Road: The park is about a 5–6 hour drive from Kampala via Fort Portal, offering breathtaking views of tea plantations and rolling hills.
  • By Air: Visitors can take a domestic flight from Entebbe International Airport to Kasese or Nyakisharara Airstrip, followed by a 1–2 hour drive to the park.

Attractions

Chimpanzees

Kibale is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees, making it one of the best places in Africa for chimpanzee trekking. Several groups have been habituated, allowing for close encounters with these fascinating primates.

Other Primates

The park boasts 13 primate species, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and olive baboons. This diversity makes Kibale the primate capital of Uganda.

Birdlife

With over 375 bird species, Kibale is a top destination for birdwatching. Notable species include the African Pitta, Green-breasted Pitta, Great Blue Turaco, and the Black Bee-eater. The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a must-visit for bird enthusiasts.

Forest Elephants

Kibale is home to a population of forest elephants, which are smaller and more elusive than their savannah counterparts. Other mammals, such as bushbucks, duikers, and giant forest hogs, can also be spotted.

Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary

Located near the park, this community-run wetland is a haven for birds, primates, and butterflies. A guided walk through the sanctuary offers excellent opportunities for photography and wildlife spotting.

Activities

Chimpanzee Trekking

The most popular activity in Kibale, chimpanzee trekking allows visitors to observe chimps in their natural habitat. Treks last between 2–4 hours, with a maximum of one hour spent with the chimps.

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

For a more immersive experience, the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX) offers up to four hours with semi-habituated chimpanzees, giving visitors deeper insight into their behavior.

Birdwatching

Kibale is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with guided birding excursions through the forest and wetland areas. The best birding spots include Kanyanchu, Sebitoli, and Bigodi Wetland.

Nature Walks and Hiking

Several trails within the park offer opportunities for guided nature walks, including the 12-kilometer hike through the forest, which takes visitors through diverse ecosystems.

Nocturnal Walks

For a unique adventure, night walks in Kibale provide a chance to see nocturnal creatures such as bush babies, potto, and nightjars.

Best Time to Visit

Kibale can be visited year-round, but the best time for chimpanzee trekking is during the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) when trails are less muddy. Birdwatching is best from March to May and September to November when migratory birds arrive.
